Southeastern Med has been granted a three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.  The standards include proficiency in the areas of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

“The Breast Center Accreditation is a wonderful accomplishment made possible due to a committed effort by all members of the breast care team at Southeastern Med,” said Michael Sarap, M.D., surgeon with Southeastern Ohio Physicians, Inc. and Southeastern Med medical staff member. “The award takes into account available diagnostic modalities, including mammography, ultrasound, MRI and radiologic breast biopsy techniques, therapeutic treatments, which include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, and breast support services, including support groups, breast navigators, education, genetics testing and many other services. The accreditation affirms that state-of-the-art care and support services have been provided and will continue to be provided to all area women with breast cancer and benign breast disease. While there are some specialty services, like breast reconstruction, that must be coordinated with other institutions, local women should be comforted and reassured that the breast care they receive by the professionals at Southeastern Med is of the highest quality.”

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast.  This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education.  Its board membership includes professionals from 15 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services;
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options;
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; And, most importantly,
  • Quality breast care close to home.

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio May 23, 2011 – Southeastern Med and “Copers” Cancer Support Group invite cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, friends, healthcare providers and all members of the surrounding communities to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Dayâ (NCSD). Traditionally, NCSD is held the first Sunday in June, but this year the 24rd annual event will take place on Sunday, June 26 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center, 7033 Glenn Highway in Cambridge. Registration will begin at 1 p.m.

The Cambridge City Band will kick off the afternoon at 2 p.m. The survivor ceremony will begin at 3:45 p.m., and a dove release will be held at 4:15 p.m. followed by fellowship and refreshments. Everyone is invited to join in this free celebration.

This year’s keynote speaker is Kevin Sharp, an American country music artist, author and motivational speaker. As a senior in high school, Kevin began experiencing fatigue and unexplained pain that was later diagnosed as a rare form of bone cancer (Ewings Sarcoma) that had spread to his lungs. He was told that his chance of survival was slim. Uncertain if he would live six months, Kevin was introduced to the Make A Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. They honored his wish of meeting producer/performer David Foster, whose friendship sustained Kevin through two grueling years of chemotherapy, experimental drugs, and radiation treatments, as well as opening a door for Kevin to pursue his goal to become a successful country artist. To everyone’s surprise, Kevin went into remission in 1991. He made his debut on the country music scene in 1997 with the single “Nobody Knows,” which topped the Billboard country charts for four weeks.

Instead of succumbing to his illness, Kevin chose to fight. His first book, “Tragedy’s Gift,” tells the poignant and heart-wrenching story of Kevin’s battle against an illness that almost claimed his life, which is available for sale at www.sharpbook.com.

NCSD is the day each year where the public pauses to honor those around the world who are living with a history of cancer. It is also a day to acknowledge the contributions of their families, friends and healthcare providers.

The NCSD Foundation has defined a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. NCSD provides each community an opportunity to demonstrate that it has an active, productive cancer survivor population.

Sponsors for this year’s celebration include Southeastern Med, Cambridge Regional Cancer Center, Guernsey County Cancer Society and the Guernsey County Unit of the American Cancer Society.

Each survivor is welcome to bring one guest free of charge. Any additional guest is $5 per person. Survivors are asked to RSVP by June 13 by contacting Jen Fannin, manager of Cancer Registry at Southeastern Med, at 740-439-8156.

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio, May 18, 2011 - Southeastern Med is pleased to announce the appointment of Jen Fannin as its new manager of Cancer Registry.

Fannin graduated from Ohio University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Community Health. Prior to joining Southeastern Med, Fannin worked as a health educator at the Guernsey County Health Department and as the director of the American Red Cross of Ohio Hills.

Fannin has been a strong advocate for cancer prevention and early detection by serving on the American Cancer Society Board, as well as the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Coalition. “Cancer prevention and early detection is my passion,” Fannin said. “I lost my mother to lung cancer in 2001, and since then, I made a commitment to stay active by educating others about the importance of early detection and cancer research. I truly feel this position at Southeastern Med is where I am supposed to be.”

As the manager of Cancer Registry, Fannin will manage and coordinate the cancer program, compile and maintain records of patients treated for cancer, and communicate with state and national organizations about the data compared to other centers.  She will also work closely with physicians, administrators, researchers, and healthcare planners to provide support for cancer program development; ensure compliance of reporting standards; and serve as a valuable resource for cancer information with the ultimate goal of preventing and controlling cancer.

In addition, Fannin will have a role in many local cancer events and programs, including the annual Cancer Survivors Day Celebration, Coper’s Cancer Support Group, Relay for Life of Guernsey County, Breast Cancer Survivor Tea and Style Show, and the Tina Kiser Colorectal Cancer Coalition.
