Computerized
Tomography Testing
|
A Computerized Tomography scan (CAT
Scan) is commonly
referred to as cat scan testing. This type of imaging utilizes
special detectors to produce an image of various parts of the body
and any abnormalities.
|
To prepare for the test,
you may be asked to
not eat or drink anything after midnight or at least 4 hours prior to your
exam. If you are scheduled for a chest, abdomen or pelvis exam we
suggest that you wear a jogging/wind suit with no metal zippers or
metal buttons. If you are unsure of your instructions you may call
your physicians' office or the CT department at 740-439-8038.
|
| When you arrive at
the medical center go to the
Outpatient Registration (located on the ground floor) to register for your
test. You should arrive approximately 45-60 minutes prior to your
scheduled test time. |
After being registered you may be asked to remove your
clothing and out on an x-ray gown. A CT technologist will then take
you to the room where they will ask you several questions concerning your
allergies and what medications you are currently taking, especially if
they are diabetic related. You will asked to read and sign a consent form. In the
event you are scheduled for an abdomen or pelvis scan, you will be asked
to drink a flavored substance which enhances your organs on the scan. We
then allow 30-45 minutes until the substance has had time to be digested. You
may also need to have an IV started in your hand or your arm, this is
necessary for the injection of contrast material
(dye) into your bloodstream. You will then be asked to lie on the
cat scan table. The scan itself will only take
several minutes, the technologist will be able to see and hear you at all
times. If you have any concerns please voice them to your physician
or to the technologist.
After the scan is performed, you may return to your normal routine and
diet. Plenty of fluids are encouraged to flush the contrast from
your system. Your scan will be read by the radiologist and your
physician will receive a report.
