Ultrasound

An ultrasound exam is used to image different parts of the body by using sound waves to form images on film.  This type of exam does not involve radiation.
you will need to check with your physician for specific instructions.  However, if you are scheduled for any of the following ultrasound test, these instructions are general guidelines.

*abdominal scans you must not eat or drink anything for 6-8 hours prior to your exam.  You may take your medications with a small sip of water.

*single exams of any organ in the abdomen (an example of this would be your gallbladder, or kidneys) you must not eat, smoke or drink anything for 6-8 hours prior to your exam. Medications are permitted with a small amount of water.

*pelvic or bladder you must drink 32-48 oz. of liquid 2 hrs. prior to your exam and you must be able to hold your urine.  Your bladder must be full to do the exam, your bladder is like a window to your organs, this also applies for pregnancy scans.  In some cases it is necessary to perform a transvaginal scan, usually in the very early stages of pregnancy.

*prostate exam the patient must have an enema prior to the exam.  Your physician should provide this for you at their office so you can do this prep at your home.  If you are anxious about your exam, ask your physician if you need medication prior to your test.

When you arrive at the medical center you will need to go to the Outpatient Registration (located on the ground floor) to register for your test.  You should arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time.  After being registered an ultrasonographer will then come and take you to the testing area, where you will be asked questions about why you are having the exam.

After your exam is complete a radiologist will read your films and send a report to your physician.
