SEORMC
Infection Prevention Quick Reference

Purpose

The purpose of the SEORMC Infection Prevention Program is to promote a healthy and safe environment by minimizing the risk of spreading infections to our patients, healthcare workers, physicians, volunteers, visitors and other medical center guests.

Protection for Everyone
Handwashing or Hand-Rub

Careful hand hygiene decreases the risk of getting infection while in the medical center. All healthcare workers are required to wash their hands before and after contact with each patient. Patients and visitors should wash hands after sneezing or coughing, after using the bathroom, and before eating. Visitors are also encouraged to wash their hands each time they enter and leave a patient's room. An alcohol-based hand rub may be used instead of handwashing when there is no visible soiling on your hands.

Cover Your Cough!

Stop the/spread of germs that make you and others sick! Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough/sneeze or cough/sneeze into your upper sleeve/arm if tissues aren't available! Dispose of tissues in the waste basket. Clean your hands after that.

Visitation Guidelines

Please limit the number of visitors to two at any time. Anyone with a fever, cough, cold, sore throat, or any contagious illness should avoid visiting a patient in the hospital.

Special Precautions: Patients are placed on "special" precautions for two reasons:

1. their resistance to infection is low and they need extra protection, or
2. they have a contagious illness and other people must be protected.
A 'precautions' sign should not be cause for alarm. It is simply a measure taken to protect our patients, staff and visitors.

Visitors should check at the nurses' station for instructions before entering the room.

Care Notes

Patient & Family Information: To avoid spreading infection, educational handouts are available to assist with patient care needs at home and in the hospital. If you have further questions, contact your own physician, the patient's healthcare team members, or the SEORMC Infection Prevention Director at 740-439-8166.
