Those who make resolutions to incorporate healthy eating and fitness into their lifestyle can find help and support in that mission with Southeastern Med’s 2019 Group Lifestyle Balance™ (GLB) program. Registration is now open for the 2019 program session, with classes beginning on Wednesday, January 23rd from 5-6pm at Community Healthlink in Cambridge.

GLB is a diabetes prevention and education program that helps participants learn healthy eating and exercise habits in a fun and supportive way. The program schedule includes group 22 sessions throughout the year. The initial 12 sessions are held weekly with the remaining sessions held bi-weekly.

Basic goals for each GLB participant are to:

  • Achieve and maintain a weight loss of 7% due to healthy eating
  • Safely increase to 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity (such as a brisk walk)
  • Develop and maintain healthy, active habits that last a lifetime

"Most weight-loss plans are fads that offer short-term solutions to a long-term problem,” said Shelly Thompson, MS, RD/LD and Director of Wellness Resources at Southeastern Med. "Group Lifestyle Balance offers a positive change in lifestyle, where permanent weight loss and maintenance is a result of enjoyable exercise and diet."

To be eligible, participants must have one or more of the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Pre-diabetes or a history of gestational diabetes
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Overweight with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or above 25

GLB participants will receive a binder with class materials, a Calorie King and Carbohydrate Counter book, a pedometer, and an exerband, as well as pre-, mid-point and post-blood work. The blood work includes a lipid panel which evaluates triglycerides and cholesterol components and an HgbA1c, a test that reflects the average blood sugar level for the past three months.
