Southeastern Med’s newest pediatrician, Dr. Ellen Kumler, comes to the hospital with more than 15 years of experience working with children.
Prior to arriving in Cambridge, Dr. Kumler spent 20 years living in various parts of the world, including Kentucky, Washington, D.C., and Japan. She was most recently the Public Health Clinician and Medical Director at the Mason County Health Department in Maysville, Kentucky.
Earlier in her career she was a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy before becoming a pediatrician.
“I really missed being a clinical pediatrician,” said Dr. Kumler. “Being a pediatrician is a great opportunity to build a partnership with each family and optimize the health of each child.”
When considering where to establish her pediatric practice, Dr. Kumler chose southern Ohio because she has family in the area and loves the outdoors. In fact, she earned her undergraduate down the road at The Ohio State University before going on to earn her M.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Kumler says she chose Southeastern Med and Cambridge, specifically, because “there’s nothing quite like a small town. You can form connections with patients and families in a way that’s not as possible in larger metro areas.”
In her new practice, Dr. Kumler will be serving children from the time they are born until age 18-21. Her services will include check-ups, acute care, sick care and preventive medicine.
She’ll also meet with expectant families. These meetings are especially important for first-time parents to answer questions and help them understand how important checkups and other appointments are for newborns and throughout childhood.
“It’s important to establish healthy habits and create the framework of wellness and self-care,” said Dr. Kumler. “This is an important time to create healthy patterns for children.”
