Debbie Goodhart, Quality Care Management

Why this person deserves to be an Associate of the Quarter.

Debbie goes above and beyond to ensure that every patient has a good experience at our hospital.

Specific Situation

Just recently Debbie met with a young man that was diagnosed with cancer. One of his concerns was that he hadn’t had a vacation with his daughter and he wanted to experience this before he passed. Debbie spent time researching and found organizations that could help him to achieve his wishes, she printed and mailed the information to him. I have never met a more compassionate person. She truly deserves to be recognized for her service.

On another occasion, this individual helped a patient who was enrolled in an undergraduate program. This patient had an assignment due on a day that she was hospitalized and was concerned that it would hurt her GPA if she did not get the assignment in on time. Debbie recognized how important this was for the patient and worked on trying to find a computer for the patient to use as well as contacted the university to notify the patient’s instructor. This individual truly went above and beyond to relieve some anxiety for this patient.

Jessica Swisher, Patient Financial Services

swisher

Why this person deserves to be an Associate of the Quarter.

Jessica has been here for five years and in that time she has shown to live the SEORMC mission. She would literally give you the shirt off her back if you really needed it.

Specific Situation

For instance, one day it was raining out and Jessica walked over to the hospital from her office in the rain. As she came in the front door she noticed a patient standing there looking a little worried/lost. She asked if she could help her. The patient proceeded to tell her that she was nervous that she would miss her bus. She wasn’t able to stand out in the rain because she didn’t have an umbrella and was afraid that she would get even sicker. Jessica didn’t hesitate. She gave this patient her umbrella so she could stand out by the curb to catch her bus home.

Another day, she was eating lunch in the Café and noticed a gentleman and a little girl out on the patio. Being a mother, she noticed that this child didn’t have the appropriate winter attire on. She went out to her car and got one of her children’s hats and took it out to this little girl. Come to find out that the little girls mom was in the ER and had been all morning, the child was getting antsy so the family friend took her outside to get some fresh air and said they didn’t planning on being here that long but the tests took longer than anticipated and since they ran out of the house they didn’t get to grab the child’s winter hat or gloves. The family friend was appreciative of the gesture and I am sure that mother was glad to know that employees at the hospital cared enough to keep the ears of her little one covered as they would their own.

Why this person deserves to be an Associate of the Quarter.

Katrina always strives for high performance and takes pride in her work. She treats each patient with respect, dignity and care. This individual works in an area where some of her patients may be experiencing hair loss and red irritated skin due to treatment. In her position it’s important to always have a smile and a positive thought. She is equally kind to all of her co-workers. When a patient and/or staff member walks through the door they are always greeted with a smile. This individual always ensures that each patient is fully satisfied with their experience here at Southeastern Med. She always follows through and ensures that each patient and/or family members have a positive experience at our facility. Katrina truly treasures the core values of Southeastern Med and it shows in her positive attitude daily.

Specific Situation

We had a patient that transferred care from another state to Ohio and was experiencing financial hardship, housing issues as well as traveling long distance (60 miles each way.) The patient had not voiced to anyone they were experiencing such difficulties. Katrina was able to get the spouse to talk when she noticed the patient and spouse seemed to be stressed and realized what was happening. She obtained permission from the spouse and patient to contact Bonnie Burns for assistance. This individual called the Cancer Registrar and they were able to see the patient the same day (5:00 PM on a Friday.) The patient was in need of gas cards, housing that would be based on income and a place that would allow for their adult son with disabilities a place to stay as well. This individual assisted in following through with the patient and Cancer Registrar. They were able to find the patient housing locally and the son was in a safe place as well. Fuel cards were provided for the family until they were able to move to their new apartment within blocks of the cancer center for the patient’s treatments. Katrina always shows compassion for her patients and knows in order for them to get well they have to be health mentally and financially. If a patient is worrying about how to pay for treatment and travel to get there it can have an impact on the outcome. This individual always looks to ensure that each patient is well taken care of.

Vicky Davis, Laboratory

davis

Why this person deserves to be an Associate of the Quarter.

No matter how busy Vicky is she is always willing to help others with their patients; deciphering orders, checking on tests, calling doctors, and figuring tubes to be drawn. Others always know when they can count on her to the answers they need for the best customer care.

Specific Situation

There was an infant less than a month old whom a doctor ordered multiple tests requiring a large amount of blood. Vicky was contacted by some of the laboratory associates and she researched how much blood could safely be taken from the infant and how to combine the tests in order to minimize the blood taken. The mother was grateful that the lab associates took so much care in making sure that there was no harm to her baby.
